A report from Gartner Research indicated that Google’s Android is the top global smartphone operating system. Nearly 36.3 million Android-based smartphones have been sold in just the first quarter of 2011.

As InfoWorld reports, Gartner Research indicated that Android has nearly quadrupled its share of the mobile device market when comparing this year to last year. Android had 9.6% of all devices shipped in Q1 of 2010 compared to 36% of all devices shipped in Q1 2011.

When it comes to making money, the iPhone remained number one in terms of generating revenue from mobile applications. 50% of mobile application revenue came from the iPhone whereas only 39% of mobile application revenue came from Android devices.

Android, without a doubt, is still the top overall operating system on the smartphone market today. Microsoft hopes to take Android’s number one spot but introducing its Nokia made Windows Phone devices. With Nokia and Microsoft’s push to get more phones at a “very low price point,” we can expect to see some cool Windows Phone devices in a wider market base due to low prices. Ultimately, Microsoft hopes to gain a better smartphone market share and dethrone Android.

As far as the iPhone goes, there are rumors of a September 2011 release for the iPhone 5 (or iPhone 4S as many are calling it). Reports are even saying that Apple’s next iPhone will be “evolutionary not revolutionary” and might have a better camera and a different casing, but no 4G, or LTE or wireless modem.

TECH ENTREPRENEUR Frank Hannigan has found a novel way of raising money for his favourite charity. He’s going to bare all on Twitter.

Next Tuesday Mr Hannigan will be raising awareness for the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind by running a Twitter campaign called “#dearfrankie”. For one day he will transform into a twittering agony aunt and answer any question no matter how strange or personal it is. “I’m basically going to be trading in my personal privacy in return for raising awareness,” says Mr Hannigan, director of WeddingsOnline.ie and chairman of project management start-up Goshido.

“The Irish are a sarcastic bunch so I’m expecting plenty of weird questions but it should be a lot of craic,” he adds.

Mr Hannigan is assuming that some of the questions will be from budding entrepreneurs hoping to gain some insight into online business. “If anyone asks for major advice I’m planning to follow-up with further information too.”

The reason for choosing Twitter as a platform for charity involvement was simple, says Mr Hannigan. “You can use Twitter to capture data you’d never find through Google. It’s becoming a place where online content is made relevant because people you trust have recommended it.”

This “tell all” session will take place on Twitter from 1pm to 10pm, Tuesday 17th of May.

From the Press Release
Frank Hannigan launches #dearfrankie
Date: Tuesday 10 May, 2011
News Summary:
A novel fundraising event will take placefrankie on twitter the social media and microblogging site next Tuesday 17th of May called #Dear Frankie. Frank Hannigan, Cork based serial entrepreneur, will answer questions on any topic whether it’s personal, business, online advice, political…anything.
News Content:
“If serious business questions are asked I will answer them seriously. I expect there will be more than a few less serious questions asked and I will answer them accordingly” says Frank Hannigan. “It should be a lot of craic, and hopefully it will raise a lot of money for Irish Guide dogs”

The public can simply ask a question via twitter using @frankhannigan in 140 characters and just wait for Frank to send his reply. The event is completely free – but each person is asked to make a donation to Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind (IGDB). To make a donation all you have to do is click on www.guidedogs.ie/donations and select the “Dear Frankie” campaign from the drop down menu option.
“Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind changes peoples’ lives. In a very concrete way they allow people who are visually impaired and families of children with autism to achieve their full potential” Frank continued.

The #dearfrankie initiative is in support of IGDB’s national SHADES fundraising campaign which runs during May. Each year, hundreds of volunteers and supporters rally around the organisation to help raise funds towards the provision of vital services for people living with sight loss or autism. Over 80% of the organisation’s income is generated through fundraising and voluntary donations and all services are offered free of charge.

Fix common PC problems

Having trouble with your computer? You’ve come to the right place. Even if you don’t know a computer language (or want to), you can solve several common PC problems on your own.

In this article, we offer many ways to do what you need to do in Windows 7 and Windows Vista. Often, there may not be a Help topic for Windows XP, but the process is often the same as in Windows 7 or Windows Vista. The only difference is usually where to find the link in Control Panel. Most often, it’s just a matter of slightly different wording in the heading or the text describing the task. Don’t worry. If you search in Control Panel, you’ll usually find the link you need.

F1 is magic: Get help on your PC

If you can’t figure out how to complete a particular task in your software program—and you’re using a PC—the most important shortcut to know is the F1 key. Just push it while the program—Word, Excel, or whichever program you’re using—is open and active, wait a moment, and the Help window specific to your active program will appear. See an F1 key demonstration. The F1 key works with almost all Microsoft products, so it’s a helpful starting point for a wide variety of problems.

The basics

If you’re encountering a different kind of obstacle – your new device won’t appear on your desktop, an application you added won’t run, you see an error message, or your computer is refusing to start up – here are a few preliminary steps:

Before adding any major hardware or software to your system, make sure you’ve recently backed up your Windows 7-based PC or your Windows Vista-based PC as a safeguard. By using the automatic backup functions, you can schedule regular upkeep for maximum convenience.
Many issues can be resolved by simply checking to be sure that all of your plugs are connected properly. After you are sure of that, try restarting (“rebooting”) your system. Turn your computer off, and then back on a few seconds later. If the problem continues, contact ComputerCare.ie for technical support.

Follow this procedure on each computer:

Install the adapter according to the manufacturer’s instructions. (If you are using a PCI adapter, you’ll have to turn off the computer, open the casing, insert the adapter into a free PCI slot, and restart the computer.)Windows will detect the adapter and prompt you to install the driver on the included CD-ROM.Install the network software that usually comes with the hardware. You will be prompted for the computer’s name, and asked if the current computer is meant to be the server or client for Internet access.Restart the computer. Now you have to create a profile–the collection of settings that let you use the network. You can have several different profiles, so that if you take your laptop to the office or the local networked coffee house, you have only to switch profiles to instantly connect to their network. To create a profile, run the configuration program that’s part of the network software.Set the mode to ad hoc (the mode may be set as peer-to-peer) if you’re not using an access point, or infrastructure if you are.Enter the network name.If you’re using an ad hoc network, set the channel (a number from 1 to 11). All adapters on a network must use the same channel. (With an infrastructure network, the client automatically configures itself to the channel with the strongest signal.)Enter your encryption key–a series of letters and numbers, like a password–according to the vendor’s instructions. What are you waiting for? Grab your notebook, head out to the garden, and check your e-mail.

A web-based hosted solution, which means you can access Google Apps at anytime, anywhere you have an Internet connection. You might hear this type of technology referred to as “software-as-a-service” or “cloud computing”. “Cloud computing” or “software-as-a-service” is a computing model in which IT applications are provided “as a service”, allowing users to access these applications from the Internet (“in the cloud”) without needing to maintain the infrastructure that supports them. A simple way to understand the model is how people currently allow companies to run and manage their electricity rather than generating it within their home/office themselves.

With Google Apps, your data and the applications themselves are served from Google’s highly secure, scalable, and reliable data centers. Google actually builds its own data centers from scratch, so we’re able to have one of the lowest cost-per-server infrastructures in the world; which means that those savings are passed on to our Google Apps customers. Your business is able to offload the infrastructure costs and the effort it takes to maintain an on-premises solution, and focus those savings on more strategic IT initiatives.

And since Google Apps is web-based, your employees can be productive from anywhere, whether they’re at their own desk, using a different computer, or on the go with a mobile device.

The table below describes which editions of Windows Vista can be upgraded to Windows 7. The Upgrade option works with either an upgrade copy or the full product copy of Windows 7. This is described on the front of the Windows 7 retail box or on an online sales receipt.

If you can’t use the Upgrade option to upgrade to the edition of Windows 7 that you want to use, you can still use the Custom option, but the Custom option doesn’t preserve your files, programs, or settings.

What if I can’t choose the Upgrade option?

Some versions of Windows can’t be upgraded with the installation disc you’re trying to use. For example, you can’t upgrade a 32-bit version of Windows to a 64-bit version, or upgrade from a higher edition ofWindows, such as Windows Vista Ultimate, to a lower edition, such as Windows 7 Home Premium. If this is the case, you’ll need to use the Custom option during installation.

However, unlike Upgrade, the Custom option does not preserve your files, settings, or programs. You’ll need to back up your files and settings before installing Windows 7, restore them after installation is complete—and you’ll also need to reinstall your programs using the original installation discs or files.
